A pair of rare 1930s Mickey and Minnie Mouse dolls sold last month for $151,534 at Hake's Americana & Collectibles in Timonium, Maryland. The astounding price is the highest ever paid for a Disney toy. The dolls, in near-mint condition, were purchased by a private collector.

The 44-inch tall Mickey and 48-inch tall Minnie were promotional dolls for the Charlotte Clark line of dolls produced in the early 1930s. They are made of stuffed velveteen, Clark's trademark material. Mickey's trousers have 2-inch natural pearl buttons. Minnie wears a silk-like skirt and lace-trimmed pantaloons. Each doll has a 32-inch tail.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse dolls were first sold in toy shops in 1931. They were produced in three sizes: 8 1/2 inches, 13 1/2 inches and 18 inches. Only a limited number of 44-inch dolls were made. They were used on displays at large movie theaters, retail stores and in photos with Walt Disney.

Mickey and Minnie would have agreed, "That sure is swell!"
